This tiny project was one of my favourites! The home hadn’t been touched in 40 years so we stripped it and started from scratch. On a shoestring budget and only three months up our sleeve, we transformed an old beachside unit unit a comfortable holiday residence for 6. A new, flat pack kitchen was complemented with open shelving for quality tableware – proving both practical and attractive! A timber bench top offered warmth and a rustic contrast against the black and white colour pallet.
Intentionally oversized French style furniture was both comfortable and practical for seating larger groups. We kept the original brick work and painted it white for a fresh but rustic look. Luxe furs and linen cushions added extra layers of texture and the modern track lighting was an intentional contrast - defining the kitchen, living and dining areas.
While small, the main bedroom is warm and welcoming. The Venetian mirror, Juju Hat and various soft furnishings add texture and comfort. Plantation shutters always look fresh and bright and were also a practical choice against the Australian sun - ensuring filtered light on even the brightest days.
With a small budget and only four metres of space, we had our work cut out for us in this bathroom. A pre-fabricated vanity and shaving cabinet meant we could splurge on the hand made ceramic shower tiles for a warm, luxurious feel and the frameless corner shower screen doesn’t impose on the room. A few well-placed cosmetics, towels and woven basket complete the look while being eminently practical.
With space at a premium, custom made bunk beds meant four guests could be easily accommodated without feeling cramped. Each sleeping position has a dimmable, wall mounted reading light and the oversized drawers were perfect for storing household linen.
New, wall to wall decking met our client’s low maintenance brief. The boxed bench seat houses surfboards and beach paraphernalia and it also extends the entertainment space – parties of twelve can now sit comfortably outside.
There’s a marine grade, hot shower tucked around the corner of the court yard for washing off sand and salt and we painted the new axon clad walls black to contrast against the borrowed greenery of the surrounding tea-tree. Last but not least, I couldn’t resist the animal print cushions in outdoor fabric for a touch of the glamour!
